Before we answer this question there is a few things to consider.
What’s the difference?
Lab grown diamonds look identical to Natural diamonds with the human eye and have the same chemical properties. They both come in similar shapes, sizes and sparkle. Cubic Zirconia are not the same as lab grown diamonds, this diamond look-a-like is softer and does not have the same chemical properties as a Natural diamond. Cubic’s are more likely to scratch and loose sparkle overtime.
Even though Lab grown diamonds look identical to Natural Diamonds, there are differences when it comes to value, cost, sustainability and rarity.
Lab grown diamonds have no intrinsic value, as these diamonds are made by man and there is no limit on the amount that can be made. Natural diamonds, however, take a long time to form in nature and there is a limited number that can be mined. Choosing a natural diamond in your engagement rings gives you the option to upgrade on an anniversary or sell the diamond if the engagement doesn’t work out. Once you buy a Lab grown diamond, it has zero trade in value.
Lab grown diamonds cost up to 30-50% less than Natural diamonds for the same size, cut, clarity and colour. However, due to Lab diamonds having no re-sale value, we advise choosing another stone that fits your budget like a white sapphire or morganite gemstone.

When it comes to sustainability Lab grown diamonds have been said to be more sustainable as they do not affect the Earth. However, the chemicals and gases used, as well as the electricity used to power the machinery needed to create Lab grown diamonds have been found to have a negative environmental impact. It is important to take into consideration the 5th C when buying a diamond for your engagement ring; Country of Origin to ensure sustainability.
