The Dos and Don’ts of Buying an Engagement Ring

Buying an Engagement ring can be daunting, follow our Dos and Don’ts of Buying an Engagement Ring to find the perfect ring your partner will love!

Do spend at least 2 to 3 months of your salary on the engagement ring.  This is one of the most important decisions of your life and the budget should reflect this. The choice of the right life partner will mean a lifetime of happiness, therefore what better place to spend on the right choice.

Don’t overspend on your budget the next stage of your life will be very costly, with weddings, honeymoons and new homes. Set a budget and stick to it.

Do ensure that if you do not know the exact finger size, we advise that you rather make the ring one size bigger. You don’t want your partner to feel embarrassed when the engagement ring doesn’t fit. Don’t worry if it’s slightly too big, Jack Friedman offers free re-sizing on all our engagement rings.

Don’t buy a diamond without a GIA (Gemological Institute of America certificate) or an EGL (European Gemological certificate), this certificate displays the independently graded specifics of the diamond such as clarity and any inclusion not seen to the human eye that may devalue the diamond. This will also guarantee the value of the diamond.

Do shop for a diamond using the 4 C’s: carat, cut, clarity and colour. See our previous blog on the importance of choosing a diamond according to the 4 Cs. Link here

Don’t buy a diamond that appears to be too cheap. There is always a reason why a diamond would have a very low price, there is usually something wrong with the diamond that a non-diamond expert would not be able to see.

Do pay attention to your partner’s current jewellery preferences, for example, if all their existing jewellery is white metal then white gold or platinum would be the right choice. If most of their jewellery is gold then yellow gold or rose gold is best.

Do your research. This is a special purchase that you will have for the rest of your life, make sure you shop around to make sure you are getting the best price for the best ring. Check out Jack Friedman’s engagement ring collections to see if our offering is the same or better than what is available out there. We know you won’t be disappointed!

The Palesa Crown

2014 - 2016

When Rolene Strauss, Miss South Africa 2014 (who became Miss World 2014), was announced at Sun City, she was crowned with a brand new glittering masterpiece worthy of her prestigious title.

The team at Jack Friedman Jewellers wanted something that was both elegant and memorable. They decided to make the crown from platinum, one of the rarest elements in the earths crust, and synonymous with South Africa which accounts for 80 percent of world production. The precious metal in the Miss SA 2014 crown comes from Anglo American Platinum.
