Natural vs Synthetic/Cultured diamonds

Natural vs synthetic/cultured diamonds. At Jack Friedman, we only use natural and ethical diamonds. We do not create our jewellery by using synthetic or cultured diamonds. Whilst these are very beautiful and there is little to no visual difference, we want our clients to purchase jewellery that has lasting value.

The difference between Natural diamonds and Cultured Diamonds.

Natural diamonds appreciate in value whereas man-made, or lab-produced diamonds do not and have no intrinsic value as these were made up in a fraction of the time by man. Natural diamonds have been formed by nature over many, many years.

It is our prediction that the synthetic diamonds will have no resale value, and one of the benefits of purchasing good jewellery is that it is a “store of value”. The cost of synthetic diamonds is relatively high – a 1ct diamond will still cost R15,000 to R20,000, but immediately on purchase will have a Zero resale value in the trade. i.e: you lose the purchase consideration immediately.

If purchasers of synthetic diamonds decide that they would like to upgrade at a later stage or resell their diamonds, there is no value in the trade.

Jack Friedman’s source of Diamonds

Blood diamonds are a serious matter and we believe that diamonds must be sourced ethically and not have any bad trails.

At Jack Friedman, we only source our diamonds from South Africa and we only buy diamonds from reputable mines. We also have a certified chain from mine to market. This means we can send you an image of the rough diamond and another image once the diamond has been polished.
Our diamonds also come with an internationally recognized certificate of origin to ensure that our diamonds don’t come with blood links or negative connotations.

As a result of the introduction of synthetic diamonds into the market, it is our advice that all diamonds in future have laser inscriptions to identify the Certification and Natural origin of the diamond.

About Garnet Gemstone

The word garnet meaning “seed like” was derived from the Latin word “granatum” which largely refers to the Pomegranate Plant. Garnet is so named due to its significant colour reference to the pomegranate, whose seeds are similar to the Garnet crystals.

One can also find an unusual ‘colour change Garnet’, which is especially unique and rare. It is a very sought after gem due to its unique ability to change colours in different sources of light. A colour changing gem combined with a unique design will undoubtedly be a very exquisite piece in one’s jewellery collection.

Three Shades of Blue

Did you know that the Blue Topaz comes in three exquisite shades of blue?

  • Sky Blue
  • London Blue
  • Swiss Blue

What are these three shades of blue?

Although they are all blue, they are definitely not the same. In fact, to the eye they could be identified as completely different Gem Stones! And yet are all members of the same family.

Sky Blue Topaz

The lightest shade of blue, it is pale and has the translucency of water. It is a gentle “powder” blue, reminiscent of impeccably clear ocean water on a tropical island. Whilst pale, the Gem has incredible brilliance and has a Blue shimmer when worn.

The name is “Sky Blue”, for the palest of the shades of Blue Topaz, however, we at Jack Friedman believe that the Sky Blue is far more appropriate to the Swiss Blue Topaz below. Sadly, the people who coined the term probably did not have the benefit of seeing the African Sky.

Swiss Blue Topaz

This is the most famous of the Blue Topaz’s.

Perfectly balanced lighting within this Topaz cause it to be a bright electric and incredibly intense blue. Imagine a summer day with a perfect clear sky – “The Big African Sky” – this is the colour of the Swiss Blue Topaz, and the main colour we at Jack Friedman select.

London Blue

This gemstone is the darkest of the Blue Topaz and is a more dramatically vivid blue and is also the most valuable of the three. We are uncertain where the name London Blue originates, however the colour leans towards a vivid Greyish Blue, perhaps inspired by the Mid Summer late evening London sky – – dramatic and dark.

Conclusion – Advice for the Gentleman

Instead of surprising your lady with your preference of the 3 shades, let her select.

  • Fistly, Blue is the colour that symbolises trust, therefore by implication she is saying “I trust You”? Maybe even implying I trust you so much that I am willing to be the mother of your children!
  • Secondly, What does her selection tell you about her personality and character? This is an incredibly valuable tool to determine if you see yourself in this lady’s life!

Blue birthstone variants
Sky Blue – This the gentlest of blues and implies an innocent and caring nature. This lady wants a man to take care and provide for her, and would be the perfect mother for your children!

Swiss Blue – This strong blue would be selected by the determined woman that is feisty and will be an equal partner in all her endeavors. She is outgoing, sporty and fun.

London Blue – This woman is confident and successful in her career and business. She is hardworking, trustworthy and knows what she wants.

Engagement Rings

Choosing Your Halo Engagement Ring

When choosing your halo engagement ring, this style offers a lot of options for creating the big diamond look we all love as well as personalizing your engagement ring.

If you want to make a splash with a small budget, the halo engagement ring is a brilliant option as this setting literally makes your diamond look as much as a half a carat larger.

Round Diamond Halo Engagement Ring

The halo engagement ring encircles the center diamond with a seamless diamond collection that will most certainly focus the attention to your center stone – this might be a diamond or a gemstone, and create interest and draw people’s gaze to your ring.

The halo engagement ring made its debut in the 1920s, when the style known as Art Deco became prominent. Their current resurgence has rocketed halo rings to second place behind the classic solitaire as the most favored style of engagement ring. Halo rings are almost as classic as solitaires, but with a stylish twist.

The classic choice for the halo engagement ring is white gold or platinum. As you explore your halo engagement ring options, you may discover rose or yellow gold is the perfect complement.

Oval Halo Engagement Ring-Halo-Engagement-Ring

Yellow gold is a great choice for diamonds with some yellow in them because it downplays the tint (white gold would emphasize it — something you likely don’t want to do unless you have a natural yellow diamond). Two-tone settings can be an interesting choice.

Rose gold engagement rings are becoming increasingly popular and it can impart a vintage feel. The soft rose colour can enchance assorted coloured gemstones such as morganite and green peridot.

The amazing Jack Friedman halo engagement ring is able to accommodate a wedding band and depending on your needs we will advise the best suitable match.

There are so many options that the halo engagement ring offers and it is important that you remember that at Jack Friedman we are able to create your engagement ring from scratch, meaning your own idea can come to life and adorn your hand!

About Miss South Africa

The Creative Thinking Behind The Miss South Africa Enhle Crown

As a main feature we used the infinity sign to symbolize the enormity and ongoing nature of her roll as Miss South Africa.

The three main stones are Sugilite also called Luvulite (sold as the stone of love) This gorgeous stone is mostly purple and most often associated with royalty. The deposits of this unique translucent violet stones come from South Africa. The mine where these specific stones were mined is in a town called Hotazel in the Northern Cape. This violet crystal has a highly protective and healing property. One of Miss SA’s privileges is to assist in the healing of our nation and its people and this stone will protect her in doing so.

Next to the Sugilites in the top row of stones we used Amethyst, a stone that works in the emotional, physical and spiritual planes to provide calm, balance, patience and peace. This will assist her in her roll as Miss SA as a role model to the youth to exhibit appropriate behavior and a positive attitude.

The rest of the stones used in the crown are faceted white quartz crystals. We chose these as we would love our Miss SA to be able to wear her well deserved crown while travelling, attending prominent events and for everyday smaller functions without the fear of potentially losing a stone.

We then decided to bind these wonderful stones together by a triangle like shape, which are stacked in layers, not a flat surface, with alternating layers paved with stones leaving a gap in between the layers. These trinities represented by the triangle shapes are power, intellect and love.

The crown was made from silver. Silver is the metal of the moon. Like the moon and water, silver is reflective and used to mirror the soul. The bottom of the crown forms a full circle that will have an cushion like inner that will adjust according to head width and allow for Miss SA to wear her hair up or down comfortably. A triangle like pattern with soft rounded edges was engraved in this space to soften the look and break the flat surface.

Furthermore the entire crown has a milgrain finish on the edges of the metal to soften the appearance and round of the look.

Platinum Palesa Crown Made For Miss South Africa

A platinum masterpiece created by leading South African jewellers Jack Friedman

The PALESA crown for the Miss South Africa was unveiled in 2014 at the Jack Friedman Sandton City store.

When Rolene Strauss, Miss South Africa 2014 (who became Miss World 2014), was announced at Sun City, she was crowned with a brand new glittering masterpiece worthy of her prestigious title. Liesl Laurie also had the privilege of being crowned with the extraordinary Palesa crown.

Sun International, long-time licence holder of the Miss SA competition, has unveiled a magnificent, modern platinum crown especially created for the dazzling occasion by Jack Friedman Jewellers.

The crown is synonymous with beauty pageants and the Miss South Africa organisers decided that a new headpiece had to be created for the new look and revamped Miss SA pageant.

The team at Jack Friedman Jewellers wanted something that was both elegant and memorable. They decided to make the crown from platinum, one of the rarest elements in the earths crust, and synonymous with South Africa which accounts for 80 percent of world production. The precious metal in the Miss SA 2014 crown comes from Anglo American Platinum.

Working with pageant designer, fashion guru Malcolm Kluk, the Jack Friedman team took inspiration from the natural beauty of indigenous South African flowers and traditional patterns to create the new simple and striking crown.

Birthstones

Ethiopian Opals

The October birthstone is one of the most lustrous and radiant of gems – an ever-changing depth of fiery iridescence – ever refracting, ever reflecting, always giving wonder and delight.

It is Opal. And it just might possibly be the perfect gift!

Ethiopian opals are one of the most amazing stones on the market. The plays of colours often go through the whole piece of rough, which make it an easier to produce a nice form with remarkable patterns as well as plays of colour that can be seen anywhere else in the natural world. This type of Opal has proved itself to be just as stable as any of the premium Australian opals but at lower prices.

During the time of the ancient Roman and Greeks Ethiopian opal was often perceived as a Promethean cut stone that had stole fire from the gods and give it to mankind. As are primand that the gods bestowed opal with a reaction to heat that would make the high-water content silica gel to dry out and break up, referred to as “crazing” by gem dealers.

Overall, Ethiopian opals are the new frontier and they have a beauty all of its own.

How To Identify Fake Ethiopian Opal

The popularity of Ethiopian Opals has exploded in the last few years.

  • Ethiopian Opals are mostly Hydrophane and do have waxy different feel compared to other Opals. It is fine if the Opal feels like this.
  • Look closely at the pattern in the Ethiopian Opal. Fake or synthetic Ethiopian Opal will usually be ‘too perfect’ and look man made. A natural opal will have less systematic patterns. They will also sometimes have a difference of colour or brightness across the Opal.
  • Look for what gemologists call ‘Columnar’ structure or ‘snake skin’ pattern. This is the sign of a fake Ethiopian Opal.
  • Look at the shape of the Ethiopian Opal; even a polished natural Opal will not be perfectly round or oval. Many times fake Ethiopian Opal will be perfectly round in shape.

Ethiopian Opals are valued for their bright flashes of colour. Ethiopian Opals are knobby-formed rather than seam-formed and have characteristically brown or dark-nodule patch. Ethiopian opals with their vivid sunburnt green and collectors prize red flashes and patterns. Ethiopian Opals have only begun to be mined recently. However, anthropologists report that around 4,000 years BC, early man used opals to make tools, which means that Africa mined opals even before Australia.

How to care for opals

This is what the GIA in American said about Opal “The hydrostatic SG of the opals ranged from 1.80 to 2.10. This broad range is in part due to the high porosity of some samples, as revealed by a significant weight increase after immersion in water (up to 8%).

The ancient Greeks upheld the opal as a sign of purity and hope. The ancient Romans believed opals kept the wearer safe from harm and called opals cupid paederos, child as beautiful as love.

The October child has been blessed with one of the most beautiful birthstones on this earth, many say the most beautiful. For thousands of years opals have been regarded as a source of imparting inner beauty and faithfulness to the wearer. For centuries royal families have included opals in crowns and necklaces as a talisman for protection, calling them the “Queen of Gems”.

An Heirloom For Life

Opals fit perfectly into all the phases of life – birth, setting forth, romance and giving, learning and loving, aging gracefully and contentment.

An opal birthstone is the perfect gift for the birth of a child – a treasure that grows in value and wonder as the child grows through to the years of grace.

The romance of opals is legendary. Cleopatra is said to have worn opals to attract Mark Anthony, Queen Victoria was a passionate collector, opals were set in the crowns and necklaces of rulers who believed in their protective powers, and Aborigines believe in the spiritual value of opals, believing they represent a sign or presence of an ancestor.

But it is not only in the halls of the famous that opals are found. They hold a precious place in the everyday gifts exchanged by loved ones.

One of the highest qualities of opals is their timeless beauty. Because of this, an opal necklace, an opal bracelet or other piece of opal jewelry is frequently treasured and handed down as a family heirloom.

Other opal information

  • Opals are unique.
  • Opals are extremely rare because of its play of colours.
  • Opals’ colours can come in flashes of red, green, purples, sunset orange, yellows, pinks, blues and some even golden.
  • The variety of amazing color play in the opal stone makes it interesting, mesmerizing and absolutely unique.
  • The play of colors in the Opal are often referred to as “pin fire”, harlequin, rolling mackerel, ribbon mackerel, broad flash, peacock harlequin, floral harlequin, flag harlequin, broad flash, Chinese writing, mintabie harlequin, miontabie harlequin broad flash and broad pattern.
  • Opals’ formation had been determined to have been made up of small uniform spheres of hard transparent silica that fits in a three dimensional order like on top of a “batch” of silica solution.
  • The light rays go through the spheres that are transparent that when directly hit, it bends and deflects at different angular form and therefore produces a rainbow of color effect.
  • Opals are now getting very popular with investors buying rare and exquisite gemstones that have a massive play of colors.
  • Ethiopian Opals are brighter, more colourful and more translucent that Australian Opals.
