Are diamonds a good investment?

The answer to the question “are diamonds a good investment?”, is not so simple and it depends who you ask. If one looks at the historical price of diamonds there are few records and the DeBeers does not provide this information, however, my research has shown that the price of a clear white 1-carat diamond in 1900 at the turn of the century was $100, if we compare that to the price of today a blue-white D colour flawless 1-carat diamond is listed at $18000 for 1 carat therefore when we look at that, under the 19 years this equates to a compound return of 4.3%. While there have been ups and downs like any investments, the long term trend has been upward.

This return of 4% is not a bad investment, especially in these times where certain countries have negative interest returns.

This however is a trade price which means when a member of the public purchases a diamond they would be paying more than this. The standard mark-up on an investment-grade diamond for a retailer is between 20 to 30%

This means, if you purchase a diamond and want to sell it a day later you are going to lose around 25% of the value, certainly not a good investment. If my investment advisor put my money into an investment and told me a-day later I’d lost 25%, I would be very disappointed.

Therefore, with a diamond, it probably takes in the region of 5 years before one could get one’s money back on the purchase of a diamond, definitely not a great investment.

What we do also have to consider however is what money do people use to purchase diamonds? And a person would not choose between a pension or an investment and a diamond. However, one would choose between a new car, a new TV, a new laptop and a diamond. Of course, the first 3 items immediately lose most of their value and after 5 years, other than maybe the motor vehicle these items would all be worth zero, and the diamond is still worth what was paid for it. This is a far better spend.

Every single other item one purchases such as clothing electronics, beauty products, furniture depreciate in value until the final value is zero, whereas diamonds will continue to grow in value.

When one also considers the pleasure, one receives from giving and wearing diamond jewellery this is truly the best reward, as happiness is the ultimate goal in life and if a diamond ring brings happiness and joy then what more can we ask for?

When one considers that the pleasure of wearing and owning diamond jewellery is the “dividends and interest” we receive, then it becomes a wonderful investment.

When asking are diamonds a good investment, One needs to also consider the store of value when it comes to a diamond and there is a saying that “with the diamond, you can put a million dollars in a matchbox” Diamonds, therefore, are the most transportable way to store one’s money. Recently a Blue Diamond weighing 7 carats sold for $14 million – you can squash four 7ct diamonds into a matchbox! IE $56 Million US Dollars in one matchbox. Whereas immovable  property is worth Zero if you need to leave a country for whatever reason and you cannot sell the property

When one considers that after 5 years one can get one’s money back, the fact that it is discretional spare money that people use to purchase a diamond and the pleasure that one receives from owning a gorgeous sparkling gem diamond, according to this author of this Blog the best investment one can make blending both growth store of value and happiness is a Diamond.

My advice as to making the best diamond investment purchase decision is the following:

– Select the highest clarity you can afford – Never select lower than SI2 clarity

-The bigger the better – IE rather choose a 1ct over 2 diamonds 0.70ct, the larger diamonds are becoming rarer over time

-Always select a reputable Certificate – the GIA is the best

-Never choose Lab-grown diamonds as these will never have any long-term value.

-The Cut grade of the diamond should be Excellent or Very Good.

-Avoid diamonds with strong Fluorescence

Different styles of Engagement Rings

When deciding an Engagement Ring you will be spoilt for choice as there are many stunning styles to decide from. Jack Friedman has many styles to select from and each design has a different element to offer from the next. We explore the various engagement ring designs in this blog.

Solitaire Rings (the classic)

We’ll start with the most popular style, the Solitaire Engagement Ring. This type of ring has one main centre diamond and many love this style due to its simplicity and beauty. It is a timeless and truly classic design.

This style suits all hand types, from wide to delicate fingers and looks elegant with a white gold or platinum band. The solitaire focuses the attention on the centre diamond, which means that the best possible quality diamond should be selected.

Solitaire rings can also be set with a different shape diamond; princess, oval, marquise etc. An elongated diamond such as an Oval, Marquise or Emerald accentuates the length of the finger.

At Jack Friedman, we have created a range of stunning Solitaire Diamond Engagement Rings to select from. The sophisticated design of our Solitaire Rings enables any wedding band to be worn with it, and the two rings will sit flush together. This means you will be spoilt for choice when deciding on the perfect wedding band to compliment your solitaire design.

Browse our stunning collections here and let us know what your favourite design is.

The most famous ring from this collection is our Kay. The Kay has a lot of significance to Jack Friedman, as this ring was named after the late Jack Friedman’s wife.

The next ring from the Solitaire collection is the very exquisite Instinct, which was designed to accentuate the diamond between the sculpted curves of the claws. It is an open setting which allows the flow of light to enter and brings the diamond to life. The instinct design was inspired by the sculptured female form.

We also have two unique solitaire rings which are our Scarlett and the Riviera. Both these rings are “twisted” in a special way.

The Scarlett has a very soft curve which adds detail to the design when the ring is rotated to admire all the sides. Even though this ring is slightly curved, it comes with a matching wedding band which hugs the Engagement Ring.

The Riviera is also curved however the claws were designed to make it look like the centre diamond is floating in the ring. This ring is perfect for those who prefer to wear one ring, that being the Engagement Ring. It is glamorous on its own to not need a wedding band.

Trilogy Ring (Triple Stone engagement ring)

The next type of style we would like to focus on is the Trilogy design. These rings are also known as a trinity or three stone engagement rings and normally has three main diamonds set together.

In most of our Trilogy Rings, the centre diamond is a little larger than the other two but you can also have the diamonds sized equally.

Trilogy rings are perfect for those who have either bony fingers, long fingers or the average hand.

We got very creative when we worked on this design and we concentrated on positioning and balance. We decided to set the side diamonds below the centre diamond which not only creates a never-ending flow of diamonds. This allows the light to bounce from the side diamonds and catch the centre diamond which creates so much more sparkle. This subtle design brings out the true brilliance in the diamonds.

We have three-well known rings from this collection. The one type has pear-shaped sides, the other trilliant shaped side diamonds and the final style has clusters of smaller diamonds on the sides.

We also have a fourth design which is not as well-known but is just as exquisite. In this ring the diamonds are floating in between the claws, the claws are interlocking and are very shiny creating the illusion of a hall of mirrors, so just imagine when the light catches the diamonds, the whole ring starts to glow.

Edwardian Engagement Rings styles

The Edwardian diamond rings are vintage yet elegant style. This type of Engagement Ring looks amazing on those with large hands, bony fingers or long fingers.

Edwardian designs entail intricate detailing and designs. We have put in a great amount of time into creating the perfect detail for the perfect ring which is why the Edwardian Collection is so special to us.

The detailed section is carefully handcrafted, and diamonds have been set into the detail of these rings to make them more noticeable.

Our Butterfly Edwardian and Heart Edwardian are really the most exquisite from our Edwardian range. The wonderful thing is you can combine white and rose gold in these rings and it makes them more interesting.

The Edwardian style of design in rings is still popular today.

Halo Engagement Rings styles

Everyone loves the Halo rings styles. This ring has a main centre diamond and is then surrounded by an outer circle of diamonds surrounding the centre diamond creating a halo. This ring is perfect for people with short or long fingers or someone with a large hand.

This ring comes in different shapes, the most popular one is the one with a round centre diamond. If your partner prefers something a little different the Halo designs come in different shapes such as the Princess Halo and the Pear-Shaped Halo. We have also recently brought out a new style of the halo ring which has a round centre diamond and is then surrounded by a cushion halo of diamonds which is perfect for the person who loves both round and other shapes of diamonds, this way they will have a combination of both.

We also have the Luce de Sol which was created for the 2019 SA Bachelor show and this ring was designed to give the halo design a totally different look. It has a lot of emotional significance as this halo ring is surrounded by an extra outer ring of diamonds to resemble the sun which shows your love will be the light wherever they go, and you will be there to guide them.

The wonderful feature of our Jack Friedman Halo Engagement Rings is that the diamonds are all set very close to each other which gives the illusion of one big diamond full of life and sparkle.

[masterslider id=”9″]

Dancing Light Engagement Rings (Multiple pave and broad style rings)

We have a collection named Dancing Light. These rings are perfect for those who prefer many diamonds. There are so many diamonds that when the light catches a design from our collection, there are little glittering sparkles all over the ring which looks like the diamonds are dancing around on your hand. These rings are a little broader than most to make sure that there is an overflow of diamonds. These rings compliment people with short fingers or large hands.

We also have a few different designs in this collection, each one is very unique and compliments the overall design. One of these rings is created in the form of a ribbon where the band is split but comes together putting the centre diamond in the spotlight. This type of ring will suit someone with large or average hands as well as someone with bony or long fingers.

We also have a diamond ring secured in a tube setting and this is really an exquisite ring because it has baguette diamonds along with the band and with two rows of round diamonds completing this design perfectly.

[masterslider id=”10″]

La Mer Engagement Rings

Another ring that has lots of diamonds is our La Mer Collection which was designed keeping in mind the waves of the ocean which we believe resembles the love a couple share which has no beginning or end like the ocean. This type of Engagement Ring compliments people with bony or long fingers.

The special u-shaped design of the claws looks like the waves and has an open setting to allow light to enter and brings out the fire glow in the diamonds. The open setting also allows for the diamonds to be admired from all angles and to show off the brilliance in the diamonds.

The La Mer Engagement rings come in a 3 Stone, 5 Stone and 7 Stone design. The amazing thing about the 3 Stone is that it can have two meanings, the waves of the ocean and never-ending love and it’s a Trilogy which represents the past, the present and the future.

Just remember that this ring will be the symbol of happiness in your future together. I hope learning a little about the different types of Engagement Rings has given you an idea of the perfect ring you want to symbolize the love you and your life partner share and has introduced you to a few of our rings which we really feel symbolizes a long-lasting love.

The fitting of a wedding band

One should always decide in advance if the engagement ring will be worn with a wedding band. All of the Jack Friedman designs can accommodate a seamless wedding band. These days a lot of couples opt not to have a separate wedding band. Often a separate wedding band is necessary for religious or spiritual reasons and should add to the overall appearance. If the wedding band does not add to the overall appearance it is not mandatory, and the value of the wedding band can be included in the Engagement ring.

Stones to use in Engagement Rings

Choosing stones to use in engagement rings is one of the happiest and most anticipated moments of a couple’s life together. A very important and often overlooked part of an engagement ring selection is the gemstone that will get set into the design. Entering a jewellery store can initially be overwhelming, however, being well informed will assist you in this experience & the celebration of your commitment. There are many stones to use in engagement rings.

Here are some guidelines on selecting the best gemstone for your engagement rings:

Jewellery in a window Jack Friedman

Deciding on which gemstone to use in your engagement rings…

A great place to start your decision process is with the Mohs(pronounced MOZE) hardness scale. This brings the significant variety of available gemstones down quite a bit. When thinking about the many options of gemstones for your engagement rings, you want a gemstone that will last not only a lifetime but one that will be passed down through generations.

How the MOHS scale will help you decide which stones to use in engagement rings.

In the jewellery industry, we use the MOHS hardness scale to measure gemstones for hardness and durability.  We only recommend stones to use in engagement rings that have a hardness scale of 7 and above.  A diamond is a 10, making it the most suitable stone for wearing every day.

Another option is tanzanite, which is a 6.5 on the hardness scale.  While it’s hard and durable, it is prone to chipping as it’s a brittle stone. The emerald is not easily scratched and has a 7.5 on the hardness scale. It has natural inclusions which do make it prone to chipping.  Tourmaline 7.5 comes in pink and green.  Using a red or green garnet, which is also a hard stone at 7.5, is a good option for a green gemstone.

The gemstones that aren’t necessarily suitable for engagement rings can be set in a pendant or a pair of earrings where they get no hard wear and tear.  They have incredible colour, brilliance and sparkle that will store value.

MOHS Scale GIA

The colours of stones to use in engagement rings…

Recent years have shown an increase in coloured stones being set into engagement rings.

If one has one’s heart set on having a different colour stone for your engagement rings, we recommend corundum. Corundum is the name of the mineral that the gemstone sapphire and ruby both belong. Sapphire comes in every colour of the rainbow, except red. As soon as corundum or sapphire becomes red, it’s known as a ruby.  Making the ruby and sapphire part of the same gemstone family.  Corundum on the Mohs scale is 9.0.

Diamonds too have different grades of colour as well as a variety of intensities. Diamonds are primarily shades of white to yellow, however, diamond-like sapphires come in many different colours. These are most suitable for engagement rings based on their hardness, size and variety of colours.

Shapes of gemstones and what stones to use in engagement rings.

The classic round cut diamond is the most popular for engagement rings. Gemstones and diamonds come in many shapes and sizes, however, there has been an increase in alternative diamond shape selections for engagement rings as well as other gemstones.

In our opinion, elongated shapes are ideal for rings because the finger is a linear object.  An oval, rectangle or marquise shape accentuates the length of the finger and makes ideal engagement rings.

Jack Friedman diamonds and loupe

Why do we recommend the diamond for your engagement rings…

There is a very good reason why diamonds are the most popular gemstones used in engagement rings. Diamonds are at a 10 on the hardness scale and there are many options. You’ve got all the different grades of colour; you can even go for the fancy yellow colour diamonds.

Laboratory diamond vs a Natural diamond in engagement rings.

If you compare laboratory-grown diamonds versus natural diamonds particularly when it comes to selecting one for your engagement rings or wedding rings, the latter is definitely the better option. It has undergone a process of millions of years that makes your diamond one of a kind.  In our environmentally conscious society, some believe that diamonds grown in laboratories are better, however, to make these artificial stones, the process uses extreme amounts of energy and electricity over short periods of time, which negatively impact the environment.

Conclusion

Having broadened your knowledge about choosing the best possible stone for your engagement rings, love and our skill of crafting your ideal diamond rings will result in the perfect masterpiece.

Choose a gemstone that will mean something to your relationship or something that will make the final choice more personal.

Lee gives the final rose to Gina Myers in The Bachelor SA…but then the tale takes a twist

The moment that the Bachelor Nation fans have been waiting for has arrived. In tonight’s episode (9 May 2019) of M-Net’s romantic series, The Bachelor SA, it was revealed that Lee Thompson handed out his final rose to Gina Myers, a 32-year-old make-up artist, in dreamy Mauritius. The gorgeous brunette stole Lee’s heart and got the stunning Jack Friedman ring slipped on her finger, as he whisked her away into the sunset.

Jozaan and Gina The Bachelor SA

In the final chapter of the journey towards finding true love, Lee had to choose between Jozaan and Gina, whom he felt were both “once in a lifetime women”. Unfortunately for 28-year-old lawyer, Jozaan Dique, it just wasn’t meant to be. Lee said the last thing she wanted to hear: “It hurts me to say this, but my heart is with someone else. I have to say goodbye to you today, I’m sorry.” The intense and emotional ending left Jozaan confused and in tears.

Back in the studio, Jozaan admitted that it was difficult to reflect on the outcome, as she still didn’t have any closure. “I’m not angry,” said teary-eyed Jozaan. “I understand where he came from. Gina is a fantastic woman and I wish them the best. It’s not me, and I am completely okay with that, it is just not easy.”

Lee breaking up with Jozaan1  Lee and Jozaan in studio at the finale3

For Gina, her dreams became a reality. Beneath a beautiful flower arch, along the side of the LUX* Grand Gaube beach, Lee professed his love for her. “You have the most beautiful heart I have ever come across in anyone, ever. And I would like to take your heart and look after it, and give you mine in return. Gina, my Gina, when I’m with you, I feel like I am home. And I don’t want this fairy-tale to ever end.” Then he offered her the beautiful Jack Friedman ring as a commitment to make her happy forever. “Gina, I love you,” he said. It was a magical, perfect moment. Gina responded with, “I love his heart and I think that is the most important part. I feel like this is all surreal. I feel like I am going to wake up from a dream.”

Lee professing his love for Gina1   Lee taking out the Jack Friedman ring

Sure enough, reality kicked in after they left the “fairy-tale Bachelor bubble”.

In the explosive tell-all evening, jaws in the room dropped when Lee revealed: “After that final day, I was extremely confused mentally and emotionally. Back in the real world, our relationship got off to a rocky-start and I wasn’t fully there for Gina when she needed me. That’s the bottom line and that affected our relationship,” Lee said.

The couple, once so madly in love, decided to call it quits. Gina believes that she and Lee’s paths were meant to cross, as they have both grown from the experience. “I walk away with incredible friendships. I’m a much stronger person for it. Beautiful memories. Lee taught me things about myself that I didn’t know. And I still believe in fairy-tales.”

So, fans may be asking, did Lee make the wrong decision? He is philosophical about it. “I can’t say I think I made the wrong decision, because in that moment and in that fairy-tale, I followed my heart.” So there you have it, Bachelor Nation: an incredible 12-week journey in pursuit of love that, sadly, didn’t end in “happy ever after”.

Lee and Gina in studio3

The 24 ladies that started the journey alongside Lee returned for a trip down memory lane. Many of the ladies have found love since… and received roses by the dozen! And the diary that caused a whole lot of trouble at the mansion remains a mystery to this day – America never got it back and Michelle.D remains the No 1 suspect, with none of the other ladies coming forward. The first-impression rose recipient, Michelle.R, revealed that she is taking a break from romance. She feels she was misunderstood in the mansion but she has no regrets.

Lee also revealed that if he could spend more time with any of the ladies, it would have to be Jenna. Awks moment of the evening? When Nontombi confronted Lee because he never made an effort to chat to her at cocktail parties!

Engagement Rings | History, Diamonds, Proposal & more

What is an engagement rings proposal?

An Engagement Rings Proposal is given as a symbol of dedication, love and commitment (to someone) between two people. It represents a long-life journey two people are embarked on and showcases their decision to want to spend the rest of their lives together.

7 stone diamond engagement ring

The history of engagement Rings

Not always as delicately crafted and polished, Engagement rings have been traced back to the first signs of human existence where before rings there were gifts that represented the couple who started their life together.

Fast forward a little, some discoveries in Egypt show that Egyptians believed circles represent eternity. A man would give a ring to a lady that he really liked or loved, and this would show other people that he owned her, she belonged to him.

The Romans believed that we have a vein from one of our left fingers that goes straight to the heart known as the “vena amoris”, the “vein of love” therefore we wear our Engagement ring on our ring finger as our partner is so close to our hearts. This had been debunked as a myth, however, Many people today still take this view. It’s romantic.

Today, we celebrate love and commitment by giving someone an Engagement ring. Engagement rings today represent commitment and bonding to a person for all of time. Engagement rings have changed over the years but each year they become more intricate and with modern technology much more meaning can be inserted into a ring and its design.

How to select your dream Engagement rings Proposal

Engagement rings different styles

Found the one you want to be with for the rest of your life? Congratulations! Knowing you found your soulmate and getting the Engagement Rings Proposal to seal the commitment is such an exciting moment in life. Selecting the perfect Engagement ring is important as this will be the most treasured jewellery piece in your partners’ life.

For guys, this task can sometimes be a challenge, deciding which type suits his lady best. It is recommended that he speak to her sisters or friends and get some clues as to what his lady likes.

We give our gents peace of mind as we know how difficult this task is so we have a money back guarantee if he proposes in one month from purchasing the Engagement Ring.

Some girls make this easy and share images of their dream Engagement rings, however, some girls don’t, and this makes their partner doubt his choice of ring up until the day she says YES.

The Price of your ring? Once a guy decides he has met his dream girl that he plans on spending the rest of his life with, the old rule of thumb used was it has to be 2-3 months of your salary. We recommend you spend what you can afford. Provide us with your budget as well as your specs and we will recommend the best Engagement ring for you. It is important to remember that this ring will be a symbol of your marriage, we also recommend it to be as personal as possible. We encourage Engraving the Engagement ring.

At Jack Friedman, one of our recommendations is that the Engagement Rings Proposal be set with a diamond in white metal, either white gold or platinum. This colour metal creates extra shine and in your Engagement selfies it will perfectly stand out. We also believe that’s what girls want to wear, something gorgeous and sparkling.

You can now decide on the type of Engagement ring. Will your lady love a Solitaire ring with a diamond or a Halo style with many little diamonds around the centre diamond or perhaps a Trilogy design with two smaller diamonds complimenting the centre diamond? These are only a few types of Engagement rings. There are many more that I will mention in an article to come… Where we describe the different types of Engagement Rings.

If you can’t decide… If it is really challenging deciding on the perfect Engagement Ring, another idea may be to propose with the diamond (buy a diamond here). Then after asking your lady’s hand in marriage and her saying YES, you can have her select or create her dream Engagement Ring and set the diamond into her ring.

Selecting the diamond for your lady’s Engagement Ring.

The next step after deciding on your Engagement ring is to choose the diamond for the engagement ring. Some prefer a colour stone, others do not. A diamond is the hardest precious stone and is perfect to symbolize your love bond as they are everlasting.

Diamonds are the hardest stone precious stone and perfect for daily wear, hence your Engagement ring needs to be set with a diamond. The diamond has a hardness of 10. Other precious stones such as Rubies and Sapphires have a hardness level of 9 whereas Semi-precious stones such as Tanzanite and Amethysts have a hardness of 7.

When it comes to the diamond, there are a few things that are extremely important to keep in mind, you want to get a diamond that comes to life with sparkle.

You may know this but if you don’t, there are 4 very important aspects of a diamond. The 4Cs.

Cut

The cut is the most important aspect to focus on when looking for the perfect diamond. A good quality diamond with a poor cut can sometimes appear lifeless.

The good cut diamond will bring out every sparkle the diamond has to offer.

Colour

When we speak of the colour, it’s the colour of the diamond and the whiter the diamond, the more valuable it is. The further you move down on the colour grading of diamonds, the more noticeable it becomes to see diamonds with a yellow colour.

The colour of a diamond does affect the cost of the diamond however, anything from colour D – H is a good white colour diamond.

Clarity

Clarity is the inclusions in the diamond. Inclusions are particles that get caught in the diamond when it is formed long before it gets cut and polished. These inclusions can affect the brilliance of the diamond and therefore the sparkle, however, they are viewed as the characteristics of the diamond and therefore no diamond is the same.

Carat

This is the total weight of the diamond. Keep in mind that the cut has a big influence on the carat. A larger carat diamond with a poor cut grade can appear smaller than a smaller diamond with a higher cut grade.

THE PROPOSAL

Princess Halo Engagement Ring

Now that you have had some time to consider the above-mentioned advice and have decided on the perfect engagement ring it’s time to plan the proposal.

There is no perfect engagement rings proposal as everyone is different and likes different things. Some may want to be pampered and spoilt. Others may just want a quiet picnic at a place with a lot of significance to you both. Maybe under a tree, you shared your first kiss or the place you met. Maybe something recreating your first date.

It’s important to think about all the little things that mean a lot to your partner and try to combine all these little ideas to create a really romantic proposal.

Good luck!!!  *wink*

The Bachelor SA

Romantic views, home cooked meals & Diamonds

In Episode 7 of The Bachelor South Africa, We saw Jenna being spoilt with a multi-date experience from the Bachelor lee Thomspon.

When Calum Scott reads out your date card you know it’ll be a magnificent evening. That’s exactly what happened ahead of the date with Jenna and Lee Thompson on The Bachelor SA. Lee Thompson took Jenna to his personal apartment at the exquisite Michelangelo Towers in Sandton City. Here they had time to connect whilst making homemade Spaghetti Bolognese. They had the chance to bond further while having the meal together and completed the evening on the balcony overlooking into a gorgeous city night. Lee had a few last surprises up his sleeve and it was at this moment that he took out the brilliantly sparkling Circle of life pendant he had selected from Jack Friedman. The circle of life was then put on Jenna.

The Palesa Crown

2014 - 2016

When Rolene Strauss, Miss South Africa 2014 (who became Miss World 2014), was announced at Sun City, she was crowned with a brand new glittering masterpiece worthy of her prestigious title.

The team at Jack Friedman Jewellers wanted something that was both elegant and memorable. They decided to make the crown from platinum, one of the rarest elements in the earths crust, and synonymous with South Africa which accounts for 80 percent of world production. The precious metal in the Miss SA 2014 crown comes from Anglo American Platinum.
